Thought Transformation Prayer of the Buddha’s Previous Lives

When difficult people appear in my life, to test my peacock training, I like to do this meditation, to remind me of this truth:  Buddha has already done it, I can, too.  One step at a time, one person at a time.  One arm, one leg, one eyeball, one ear, one drop of blood, one chocolate bar, one iPad, one BMW, I can give away, a little more at a time.  From wanting to give, to actually giving.  Intention to action.  For all SSBs.  All hungry for something from me.

PHAT!  When my teacher, the Buddha, the endowed transcendent subduer,
Was Prince liberated from All on the path of mighty courage,
He gave away his son, daughter, and the kingship.
In the same way, may I be able to give away without clinging
My surroundings and possessions
That are so dear to me.   (1)

PHAT!  DAG GI TÖN PA SAN GYÄ CHOM DÄN DÄ
NYING TOB CHÄN GYI LAM GYI NÄ KAB SU
GYÄL BU THAM CHÄ DRÖL DU GYUR PA NA

PHANG PA ME PAR YONG SU TONG NÜ SHOG

When he was born as King Great and Powerful Compassion,
He fed the tigress with his own flesh.
In the same way, may I be able to give with joy this cherished illusory body,
To the host of flesh-eaters.  (2)

GYÄL PO NYING TOB CHHEN POR GYUR PA NA
TAG MO NGANG GI SHA YI SÖ PA TAR
SHIN TU CHÄ PÄI GYU LÜ PHUNG PO DI
SHA ZÄI TSHOG LA GA WÄ JIN NÜ SHOG

When he was Prince Mighty Love,
He fed the yakshas with his own blood.
In the same way, may I be able to give with compassion
The warm blood of my heart, so difficult to part with, to the blood-drinkers.  (3)

GYÄL BU JAM PÄI TOB SU GYUR PA NA
NÖ JIN RANG GI THRAG GI SO PA TAR
CHÖ PAR KA WÄI NYING THRAG DRÖN MO DI
THRAG THUNG DAG LA TSE WÄ JIN NÜ SHOG

When he was the son of a merchant, and irrigating with water,
He liberated fish by reciting the names of those thus gone.
In the same way, may I be able to practice the giving of holy Dharma
To all beings who are destitute of Dharma.  (4)

TSONG PÖN KHYE U CHU BEB GYUR PA NA
DE SHEG TSÄN JÖ NYA NAM DRANG PA TAR
CHHÖ KYI PHONG PÄ KYE WO THA DAG LA
DAM PA CHHÖ KYI JIN PA TONG NÜ SHOG

When he was Prince Great Meaning of Virtue,
He was able to bear betrayal with compassion.
In the same way, may I cherish with great compassion those around me
Who disturb with bad manners and perverse behaviour.  (5)

GYÄL BU GE DÖN CHHEN POR GYUR PA NA
NGÄN DÖN LOG DRUB THUG JE ZÖ PA TAR
KHOR GYI LOG DRUB SHI NGÄN TRUG PA LA
NYING JE CHHEN PÖ LHAG PAR TSE WAR SHOG

When he was the bodhisattva-monkey,
He rescued the evil man from the well.
In the same way, may I be able to benefit evil beings without discouragement,
And compassionately guide them without expecting any favours in return.  (6)

JANG CHUB SEM PA TRE UR GYUR PA NA
DIG CHÄN THRÖN PÄI NÄ NÄ DREN PA TAR
NGÄN PA DAG LA PHÄN DAG MI ZHUM KYANG
ZANG LÄN MI DÖ NYING JE DREN NÜ SHOG

Alas!  There is no one who has not been my mother and father.
There is not a moment of (pure) happiness in samsara.
Therefore, may I be able to lead all my mothers,
Including the gods and demons who appear and exist, from
the realms of samsara.  (7)

KYE MA PHA MAR MA GYUR GANG YANG ME
KHOR WÄI NÄ NA DE WA KÄ CHIG ME
DE CHHIR NANG SI LHA DRE THOG DRANG PÄI
MA GYUR KHOR WÄ NÄ NÄ DREN NÜ SHOG

May I always have love for those spirits who are still here
And who dwell on the earth or in the sky,
As well as for all beings who take birth and die.
May they all enjoy the Dharma, day and night.  (8)

JUNG WA GANG DAG DIR NI LHAG GYUR TE
SA AM ÖN TE BAR NANG KHO KYANG RUNG
KYE GU NAM LA TAG TU JAM JE CHING
NYIN DANG TSHÄN DU CHHÖ LA CHÖ PAR SHOG

By this merit, may I attain the state of seeing all existence,
And my I subdue the enemy, the delusions.
May I liberate transmigrators from the ocean of samsara.
With its turbulent waves of old age, sickness, and death.  (9)

SÖ NAM DI YI THAM CHÄ ZIG PA YI

GA DANG NA DANG CHHI WÄI LAB THRUP PÄI
SI PÄ  TSHO LÄ DRO WA DRÖL WAR SHOG
